HVAC technicians frequently encounter equipment error codes when servicing systems in the field, but interpreting those codes often requires referencing manuals or contacting Technical Support. The solution dramatically reduced troubleshooting time and lowered support call volume by enabling technicians to resolve issues independently.

The Executive Problem

When technicians encounter equipment error codes, diagnosing the issue can be time-consuming. Technicians often need to reference manuals, search online documentation, or call Technical Support for help interpreting the error.

Defining a mobile solution that would allow technicians to quickly search and interpret error codes while servicing equipment.

Understanding the System

During discovery workshops, we uncovered an internal spreadsheet maintained by the Technical Support team that documented known equipment error codes and troubleshooting steps.

Although valuable, this resource was difficult for technicians to access while working on site. This insight revealed an opportunity to transform an internal knowledge base into a field-ready diagnostic tool.

Strategic Design Approach

Our strategy focused on making diagnostic information instantly accessible to technicians in the field. Key priorities included:

Technicians needed to locate diagnostic information quickly during service calls.

Simplicity

The interface needed to be simple enough to use in field environments.

Accessibility

The tool needed to work on mobile devices technicians already carried.
